Brian Howard Clough was born on March 21st 1935 in Middlesbrough. Brian was the sixth of nine children. The family lived at 11 Valley Road, Grove Hill, Middlesbrough. Football was important to the family but Brian came late to success signing to Middlesbrough at aged twenty. He is a prolific striker, scoring 204 goals in 222 appearances. After transferring to Sunderland he suffered an injury, which would force him into management. Brian started his management career at Hartlepool then moved to Derby. He briefly managed Brighton and then Leeds before settling at Nottingham Forest. In 1993, after eighteen years in management Brian retired. Brian’s management style would be seen as hard but fair. He always insisted on clean play from his players and would not answer stupid questions from the press. Brian was frequently outspoken against the football establishment but inspired great loyalty from the fans. Brian enjoyed his retirement but his health was a concern due to his former heavy drinking. He had a liver transplant in January 2002. On the 20th September 2004 Brian Clough died in Derby City Hospital from stomach cancer at the age of 69.
