DigitalCity business project
DigitalCity is a regeneration project core funded by the regional development agency One NorthEast and managed by the DigitalCity Office at the University of Teesside. Grounded on the University’s expertise and reputation in digital media and digital technology, DigitalCity’s objective is to create a vibrant, successful and self-sustaining supercluster in the Tees Valley based on the digital technologies, digital media and creative sectors.
In just three years, it has gone from a paper exercise to a fully fledged project with committed investment of over £36m [€54m]. Perhaps one of the key reasons for the success of this project is that is run – directed – by digital business people with genuine and successful track records in the digital media, digital technologies and creative industries.
Why ‘supercluster’? Because many cluster projects focus solely on commercial activity but for a cluster to genuinely work – indeed for any city to work - it must contain a complete range of activities that includes business, commerce, culture, entertainment, education, community, infrastructure and finance.
DigitalCity Business is heavily involved with the digital sectors in the North East. This includes a very stable and well established computer games development sector including middleware companies, a fast emerging advanced e learning cluster including serious games companies, and a very robust technology backbone including data centres. Furthermore, the North East is considered the UK’s leading supplier of advanced call centre support.
The DigitalCity has extremely productive relationships with area, regional and national organisations including One NorthEast, Tees Valley Regeneration, Business Link, Middlesbrough Council, Codeworks, Northern Film and Media, the Learning and Skills Council and Arts Council England – North East. It also has mutually beneficial relationships with business and commerce and constantly pursues genuine private involvement.
