Street trading

Any person who wishes to sell items from a stall in the Middlesbrough area must first obtain a Street Trading Consent from the Council.

For the purpose of street trading some streets within Middlesbrough are either designated as Consent Streets or Prohibited Streets.  Please follow the link in the downloads section on the right hand side for Consent & Prohibited street lists.

Middlesbrough Council will not issue Street Trading Consents for any person to trade in a ‘prohibited street’.

An appropriate consent from the Council will be required in order to trade in a ‘consent street’.  However, there are a limited number of consents available and the Council will consider each application on it’s own merits.

Food traders must also register with Middlesbrough Council’s environmental health office, contact 01642 728666  for further details.

You do not need a Street Trading consent if you are:

  • A market trader operating at a licensed market venue
  • A news vendor selling only newspapers and periodicals
