Portage service

What is the Middlesbrough portage service?

Portage is a home visiting educational service for pre-school children.

Portage is based on the principle that parents are the key figures in the care and development of children.

Portage aims to support the development of young children's play, communication, relationships and full participation in day to day life within the family and the community.

Portage offers practical help and ideas to make learning fun for all the family.

How does portage work?
Trained portage home visitors visit families weekly or fortnightly at home or in an agreed setting.

Families share with home visitors their understanding of their child's individual gifts, abilities and support needs.

Together the families and home visitors identify strengths and goals for future learning.

The aim of each portage visit is to decide on an activity, which the family can practice and enjoy together.

All activities are based on fun and success for the child.
