Becks and watercourses

The council is resonsible for the maintenance of Becks and watercourses and any direct flooding on public land. Most of the work is carried out on behalf of the Environment Agency who have the overall responsibility for flood defences and the management of these watercourse which have been designated as ' main rivers'. These designated becks are: Middle Beck, Ormesby Beck, Marton West Beck, Newhan Beck.  Becks under direct council control are: Bell Blue Beck and Spencer Beck.
 
We clean all 28km of becks and watercourses 3 times per year for the removal of debris from the channel to maintain the hydraulic flow.
                              
All grids / trash screens are cleaned twice per week, and on receipt of a servere weather warning.

We will clean all becks three times per year . We will also attend to blocked and flooded becks within 2 days

Note: Blocked mains and sewers are the responsibility of Northumbrian Water, follow this link to access their website
