Where your waste goes?
Since May 1998 the SITA UK energy-from-waste (EfW) plant (near the Household Waste Recycling Site) at Haverton Hill has processed municipal and confidential waste for the four Teesside local authorities of Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland, and Hartlepool. This means that much of the waste generated in the Tees Valley that cannot go for recycling is able to be diverted from landfill and used to generate electricity.
Since opening the plant has:
- processed over 2.7 million tonnes of waste.
- produced over 1.5 million megawatt hours of electricity.
The site also has an ash recycling facility where bottom ash from the EfW process is screened for ferrous and non-ferrous metals and recycled for use as aggregate in the construction industry.
Since 2000:
- over 514,000 tonnes of incinerator bottom ash has been recycled for use as aggregate.
- over 48,500 tonnes of ferrous metals, and over 9,500 tonnes of non-ferrous metals have been recovered and recycled.
