Equality and Diversity

equality & diversity

The Council celebrates the diversity of our town and the enrichment that a multicultural society and workforce brings.

Middlesbrough Council will afford equal opportunity in all aspects of employment, irrespective of disability, gender, race, religious belief, age, sexual orientation, marital or civil partnership status and welcomes applications from candidates from all sections of the community.

We have a policy of inviting for interview people with disabilities who meet the essential criteria for the post, as set out in the person specification of the job, and who request a “guaranteed interview”.

As part of its Positive Steps recruitment initiative the Council has set up a Positive Steps Steering Group. The group leads on developing positive action measures aimed at improving representation of those minority groups currently under-represented in some areas of the workforce, so that the workforce more closely reflects the profile of the local community.

Employee focus groups for employees from minority groups are held on a regular basis.

The Council has achieved Level 4 of the Equality Standard for local Government and is working towards the Excellence level of the Equality Framework for local Government.
