Many of our catalogues are available on line. The catalogues give details of individual documents and the database can be searched for subjects, places, surnames.
We have produced leaflets which give details of our most popular family history sources, eg parish registers, burial records, registers of electors, etc. These leaflets are available to download free. Please follow the register, records and transcrips links below.
We have a large collection of local building plans dating from the 1850’s to the mid twentieth century. These show details of all building plans submitted to the local councils for planning permission. This collection is of national importance. We have a fascinating collection of diaries kept by members of the Ward Jackson family of Normanby Hall. The diaries paint an excellent picture of the lives of the country gentry of the North Riding of Yorkshire, and record events such as a visit from Captain Cook. The diaries of Ralph Jackson, spanning the years 1749-1790 have been transcribed and are available online, please follow the link to Historic Cleveland on the right hand side.
We also have here the Shipping Registers of the ports of Hartlepool, West Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and Stockton on Tees. The registers give the physical dimensions of ships registered at these ports, ie the length, breadth, the number of masts, the type of figurehead, etc and give details of the loss or destruction of the vessels. The Hartlepool Registers 1845 – 1855 have been digitised and are available online, please follow the link to Port Cities on the right hand side.
