mima fountainmima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art)

mima is a £14.2 million landmark new building designed by Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects.  Located in the heart of Middlesbrough in the North East of England, mima is surrounded by a £5 million public square and situated between the Carnegie Library and Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s sculpture, ‘Bottle of Notes’.

The gallery brings together the Town's art collections for the first time and hosts temporary exhibitions of fine art and craft from 1900 to the present day.  Featuring the work of internationally acclaimed artists, the programme includes; painting, drawing, ceramics, jewellery, sound, film, and mixed media, photography and sculpture and exhibitions change every quarter.

Did you know...

mima also provides a programme for primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities.

These consist of half day sessions linked to the current exhibitions programme and mima’s collections. Other ongoing projects involve new technologies such as podcasts and video conferencing. An ‘Art Creator’ CD for PCs is available for sale in the shop for £5, exploring images, text, scale and pattern for use at school or at home.
