Sports development team

Welcome to the Middlesbrough Sports Development Team page.

Middlesbrough Sports Development Team have office accommodation in Stewart Park but they deliver activity and sports sessions across the town. The team are not linked to a single venue or facility and can deliver across the town. The aim of the team is, broadly, to make more people more active. We want to help people to access and enjoy physical activity opportunities and experience all of the social and health benefits associated with participation in physical activity.

We are keen to work with new groups and support communities in becoming active. If you feel we can support you or your group, please get in touch.

The team has 13 experienced and enthusiastic Sports Development Officers in a range of full and part time positions working across a variety of physical activity and sport related areas.

Delivery is broad and varied ranging from curriculum support with children through to activity for older adults keen to get active and improve their quality of life.

Inspiring Middlesbrough’s Young Sports Leaders

Middlesbrough Council’s Sports Development team in partnership with Kings Manor Specialist Sports College and Middlesbrough College will be leading a delegation of 25 young people from Middlesbrough in a visit to the 2012 Olympic Stadium, London.

Working alongside Hackney Borough Council this visit will also include a sporting competition against young people from the East End of London, training with Paralympians and a music workshop.

This visit forms part of a broader programme that will also see the young people from Middlesbrough officiating at the Middlesbrough Primary School Athletics Championships and delivering sports hall athletics events in the Autumn.

The project seeks to use the power and momentum of the Games within the London Borough of Hackney to genuinely inspire young people within Middlesbrough to participate in sport and spread the Olympic message and values.

The programme will take 20 young people from a variety of age groups from Years 7 to 10 in addition to five further education students to visit the London Borough of Hackney. The students chosen will be those who are currently the sport ambassadors within schools across Middlesbrough.

The trip will reward the work of the young ambassadors and hopefully inspire them to continue their work in getting more young people involved in sport.

Day 1 – The day will start with a tour of the Olympic Park followed by an opportunity for the young people to make friends with their counter parts from Hackney whilst watching the European Beach Football Championships and the World Cup Match between England v Slovenia on a big screen in Shoreditch Park.

Day 2 – Will start with a mini athletics competition between the different areas. Young people will compete against each other with the aim of achieving their personal best which will also promote the Olympic Values.

Following this competitive element, young people will be given the opportunity to take part in a music development workshop. The aim of this session is to provide an artistic element to the event to ensure everyone is challenged and encouraged to try new things which are perhaps out of their comfort zone.

To ensure all of the students get as much as possible from the event, students attending from Middlesbrough College, will be asked and supported to act as leaders/buddies for the younger members of the group during the visit to Hackney.

This project has been awarded ‘Inspire Mark’ by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG). Seb Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: ‘Developing Middlesbrough’s Sports Ambassadors Today; Inspiring Middlesbrough’s Sports Leaders of the Future’ is encouraging Middlesbrough’s young people to fulfil their potential. I am proud that with the help of partners such as Middlesbrough Council Sports Development Team, Kings Manor College and Middlesbrough College we are delivering on our vision to use the power of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to boost participation in Middlesbrough.”
