Residents on Patrol

Residents

The successful Residents on Patrol scheme, which was developed in January 2006.

Residents on Patrol gives members of the community the opportunity to make this a reality.
Local residents who are interested in becoming involved. Activities include; fortnightly walks around local areas, reporting any issues regarding dumped rubbish, overgrown bushes, broken street lights, graffiti, unsafe walls, insecure houses, fire hazards etc. These defects are then reported into the Council’s Contact Centre under a special resident's on patrol account.

To ensure feedback the Council produces a report within 2 weeks of recieving complaints, regarding progress which is then fed back to the residents.

We have an excellent group of volunteers in Middlesbrough, who attend regular walks on their patches. Some of the volunteers are also encouraging their neighbours to participate, which is very encouraging as residents are taking ownership of their areas.

In 2006 the Scheme was involved in a whole range of activities including the following;

  • Home Office recognition – Respect Task Force accompanied residents on a walkabout of the Thorntree area
  • Held a School Competition to rename the scheme, 3 schools entered plus a Youth Group in Thorntree, with over 60 entries. The winner received a £50 voucher for Hollywood Bowl.
  • Developed the scheme to incorporate a further 5 wards
  • Built on our partnerships with Statutory Agencies- MBC Community Safety Personnel, Enforcement Officers, Erimus Housing and other Housing Associations. This helps the volunteers to understand roles and prevents duplication.
  • Established close links with Cleveland Fire Brigade, who have offered our volunteers Arson Awareness Training.
  • Two walk “leaders” given First Aid Training.
  • 110 walks completed
  • 4 social events
  • 20 promotional events
  • Identified a group of young dads & a youth group who are interested in doing the walks
  • Established links with other Community Groups, including The Hindu Centre
