Details of the different ways you can pay
Paying Your Council Tax Over 12 Months
If you would like to pay your council tax over 12 months from 30 April 2013 to 30 March 2014, please contact Revenue Services on (01642) 726007. Alternatively you can e-mail Revenue Services at ctax@middlesbrough.gov.uk. quoting your account number, name and address.
Please note requests to pay over 12 months must be received by 10 April 2013.
Payment by Direct Debit
Middlesbrough Council has a flexible approach to direct debits and offers a range of direct debit dates to suit individual circumstances.
If you would like to pay by direct debit please call Revenue Services on 01642 726030 and your direct debit will be set up immediately. Please remember to have your council tax account number and your bank or building society details ready.
Payment by standing order
Payments can now be made direct from your bank or building society account by standing order.
Please contact the Overpayment Recovery Section on 01642 726562 so we can complete all the paperwork for you. A letter will then be sent to you confirming the instalment arrangement and our bank details. You will then need to take this letter to your bank or building society who will set the standing order up on your bank account.
You will need to instruct your bank on how much to pay and give them the following details: Payment to be made to 'CO-OP Bank Plc, Middlesbrough Council Income Account, sort code: 08-90-42, Account Number: 61652510, fund reference: CT insert your Council Tax account number.
Please remember to change the amount of your standing order when your annual council tax increases in April.
Please note that if you find it more convenient you can pay the total amount of your Council Tax immediately.
Payment by telephone - available 24 hours
If you wish to pay your Housing Benefit Overpayment or Council Tax by telephone please ring 01642 726726 at any time and have the following details ready:
- Your 5 digit invoice number or Council Tax account number
- Your debit or credit card details
- The amount you want to pay
Please note: A unique reference number will be given to you when you make your Council Tax payment, please remember to keep this. If your account number ends in 'X', please replace 'X' with the * button on your telephone keypad when entering your account number.
Payment by personal visit
You can pay by taking your invoice together with your payment to either of the following two offices:
- Middlesbrough House, 50 Corporation Road, Middlesbrough,TS1 2YQ (Open Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 8.30am to 4.30pm, Wednesday 10am to 4.30pm and Friday 8.30am until 4.00pm).
Please note from 3 April 2013, Middlesbrough House opening times will change (Open Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 8.30am to 4.30pm, Wednesday 12.30 to 4.30pm and Friday 8.30 to 4.00pm). The change will only effect the Wednesday opening time.
- Shelton Court (Area 2), 15 Shelton Court, Thorntree, Middlesbrough, TS3 9PD (Open Monday & Friday 9am to 4pm, and Wednesday 10am to 4pm)
You can also pay anywhere displaying the Paypoint and Post Office Logo's.
Payment by post
Cheques and postal orders should be crossed and made payable to 'Middlesbrough Council' and forwarded to:

Cash must not be sent through the post.
Postdated and third party cheques or cheques on non-standard stationary will not be accepted. Please state your invoice number or Council Tax account number when sending payment. The Council cannot accept responsibility for payments lost in the post.
Payment by Post Office or PayPoint
Payments are also accepted at any Post Office or establishment displaying the PayPoint logo, free of charge. You will need to take your invoice with you showing the barcode on the front. A separate receipt will be provided which you should keep as proof of payment.
If you pay by cheque at a Post Office, the cheque should be crossed and made payable to 'Post Office Counters Ltd'.
