Inspection of Workplaces

Workplace health, safety and welfare rules aim to protect workers and visitors against risks to their health or safety arising from work activities.

Health and Safety laws are enforced in Middlesbrough by the Council's Food and Safety Team. In certain types of workplaces, such as factories and building sites, the laws are enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Health and Safety Officers visit workplaces to assess how safely work activities are being carried out. This may include the safe use of equipment, the safety of the working environment, managing health and safety and ensuring work practices such as working at height are not carried out without proper procedures and controls in place to protect people.

Accidents in the workplace

Workplace accidents can lead to serious injury and even death. They affect employers, employees and members of the public and they cost the UK economy millions of pounds each year in lost working days and lost productivity, medical treatment, sick pay, insurance claims, compensation and fines.

Health and Safety Officers investigate complaints about workplaces, reportable accidents, dangerous occurrences and reportable work-related diseases in Middlesbrough.
