Details of the role and duties of Electoral Services

Middlesbrough Town Hall

This section will tell you everything you need to know about electoral services including how to vote. There will be regular updates with all the latest news relating to elections.

We compile and publish the Register of Electors for the Borough of Middlesbrough.

We maintain and update the register during the year through the rolling registration procedures.

We maintain the absent voters lists i.e. electors who choose to vote by post or through a proxy appointed to vote on their behalf.

We organise and run elections for local elections (ward, parish and mayoral), national elections (parliamentary and European parliamentary) Police and Crime Commissioner elections and referendums.

The Borough is divided into 23 wards that elect 48 Borough Councillors.  Some wards have a single councillor, and others have two or three. There are two parishes and two parliamentary constituencies.  Middlesbrough Council also has an elected Mayor.

We deal, on the Council's behalf, with reviews of parish areas and electoral arrangements and act as a consultee in other boundary reviews that affect the Borough. We also deal with reviews of the polling districts and polling places that define where you vote.
