Brief outline of child employment laws
Children of compulsory school age can benefit greatly from part-time work provided that the type of employment is suitable and properly regulated. You can find the application form and guidance on the regulations regarding child employment below.
School work, home work and attendance at school are paramount
No child under 13 years old may be employed
Any employment that is undertaken by a school aged child must be licensed with Middlesbrough Council and an employment card must be obtained by the employer.
Hours that a child may work are:-
13-15 years old - A child may work for either 2 hours before school OR 2 hours after school OR 1 hour before and 1 hour after school and up to 5 hours on a Saturday totalling up to 12 hours per week.
During school holidays, a 13-15 year old may work up to a total of 25 hours per week
15 to school leaving date - A child may work for either 2 hours before school OR 2 hours after school OR 1 hour before and 1 hour after school and up to 8 hours on a Saturday totalling up to 12 hours per week.
During school holidays, a 15 year old may work up to a total of 35 hours per week.
