Council tax

Details of bands & charges and discounts & exemptions

Council tax is one way in which the Council raises money to pay for the many vital services it provides. The amount of the council tax is set and the tax is collected as laid down in the Local Government Finance Act 1992.

The money collected from council tax helps to pay for local services such as schools, roads, libraries, police, fire and rubbish collection, as well as many other local services.

We want to make our services the best we possibly can and provide you with excellent value for money.

Most domestic properties are subject to council tax. One bill is issued per property, whether it is a house, bungalow, flat or maisonette and whether it is rented or owned.

It is a property tax with a personal element - that is, it takes into account the value of a property and the number of people aged 18 or over who live there.

The amount payable is based on the council tax band into which the property has been placed.

Details of the Council Tax charged in 2015/2016, overall Spending Plans and other financial information is set out in this leaflet. A printed copy can be provided on request by telephoning 01642 726007.
