Carers

Who is a carer?

We could all be carers at some point in our lives. We may care for our children, parents, othe family members, friends or neighbours.

You may be providing (or intending to provide) emotional, practical or physical support to someone on a regular basis. This could be for someone who has a drug or alcohol problem, a mental health problem, a physical or learning disability, an elderly person or someone who needs caring for as a result of illness. The care you provide must be on an unpaid basis, other than any benefits you receive.

You may need support not only to look after the person you care for, but also to do things that are important to you. For example, you may like to work, take up training, education or leisure activities.
