Changes to our phone line opening times

We're changing the opening times for our phone lines. From Monday 5 July 2021, you'll be able to call us between 10am and 4pm. If you cannot call us during those hours, you can get in touch with us a different way.

For questions about Council Tax or Business Rates, use the revenues enquiry form. For questions about Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction, use the benefits enquiry form. For questions about Housing Benefit Overpayments, email HBOP@middlesbrough.gov.uk. For questions about free school meals, email FSM@middlesbrough.gov.uk.

We've started using a new phone service to contact customers who:

  • have a Housing Benefit overpayment to repay
  • have Council Tax or Business Rates debts
  • need to give us more information about their Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction claim

If you're called by the new phone service, your call will come from 01642 843048 (Housing Benefit overpayment), 01642 843027 (Council Tax and Business Rates), or 01642 843070 (Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction claim).

You cannot use those numbers to get in touch with us. You can contact us about benefits, Council Tax, and Business Rates by calling 01642 726006.

Is this a scam?

No. If you get a call from 01642843048, 01642843027, or 01642843070 then it is not a scam.

  • If you get a phone call, you will be asked to press 1 to speak to a caseworker at Middlesbrough Council.
  • If you get a voicemail, you will be given a number to call to speak to a caseworker at Middlesbrough Council.
  • If you get a text message, you will be given a number to call to speak to a caseworker at Middlesbrough Council.

You will not be asked to give any personal information before you press 1, or phone the number, to speak to a caseworker.
