Coronavirus (COVID-19) Bereavement Services update

Visiting the Bereavement Services office

The Bereavement Services office is open Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 12pm (not including Bank Holidays). We recommend that you wear a mask when entering the office, and socially distance wherever possible.

You can also contact us by calling 01642 817725 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 2pm) or emailing bereavementservices@middlesbrough.gov.uk. We aim to respond to email queries in 5 to 7 working days.

Our safety recommendations

Coronavirus restrictions have ended, but the government is urging everyone to stay cautious.

We're recommending the following maximum number of attendees at services:

  • St Bede's Chapel - 60 attendees
  • St Hilda's Chapel - 30 attendees

In the interests of safety, we also recommend:

  • wearing face coverings inside the chapels
  • social distancing inside the chapels
  • using the hand sanitiser provided
  • no singing by mourners

If you do not want to follow our Covid-secure recommendations, please let us know via your funeral director.

We reserve the right to change these recommendations, or put in place restrictions or limitations, based on local public health guidance.

Visiting the Chapel of Remembrance

The Chapel of Remembrance is open from 9am to 12pm, 7 days a week. You can also view the Book of Remembrance online at any time.

Memorials and remembrance

Appointments must still be made to:

  • collect ashes
  • scatter ashes in the Garden of Remembrance
  • place ashes into an above-ground vault

To keep you and our staff safe, we'll be doing things a bit differently. For example, you can book appointments in advance, but you will need to call us back 48 hours before your booked date to confirm your to time to attend. We'll explain all these things when you contact us.
