Coronavirus (COVID-19) Bereavement Services update

Attending services

Anyone who attends a cremation service at Teesside Crematorium (St Bede's or St Hilda's chapel) must wear a face covering.

The maximum number of people who can attend burial and cremation services is 30 people. Please follow social distancing rules at all times with anyone who is not part of your household or 'bubble'.

Please limit the number of people attending the burial or cremation service to members of the deceased person's household, and their close family and friends.

Memorials and remembrance

We're currently unable to accept any applications for memorials. Please don't try and send us an application, as we will not be able to respond. We're hoping to start accepting memorial applications again in October, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

You can visit the Crematorium to:

  • collect ashes
  • scatter ashes in the Garden of Remembrance
  • place ashes into an above-ground vault

Because of new government rules, only 6 people can attend to scatter ashes, or place ashes into a grave or an above ground vault. You still need to stay 2m apart from anyone who's not part of your household. Please remember to stay 2m away from our staff too.

To keep you and our staff safe, we'll be doing things a bit differently. For example, you can book appointments in advance, but you will need to call us back 48 hours before your booked date to confirm your to time to attend. We'll explain all these things when you contact us.

Visiting the Chapel of Remembrance

The Chapel of Remembrance is open, but with some important restrictions.

The Chapel will be open from 7 days a week, from 10am to 2pm only.

Only two people will be allowed in the Chapel at one time, and they must follow social distancing rules. If you're visiting the Chapel with people from your household or 'bubble', this will not apply. Anyone entering the Chapel must wear a face covering.

You can only go into the Chapel to look at the Books of Remembrance.

You won't be able to:

  • go into the prayer room
  • leave flowers (but there are flower containers on the Memorial Wall which you can use)
  • write out a message for the Tree of Life or give a hospice donation

Changes and closures still in place

The following changes are still in place:

  • The cemeteries and crematorium office is closed to the public. Please contact staff by email or phone.
  • For cremations, the curtains will be closed for the committal until further notice.
