Coronavirus (COVID-19) Register Office update

You can now book the following:

  • an appointment to make a birth registration
  • a wedding
  • a civil partnership
  • an appointment to give notice of marriage/civil partnership

Citizenship ceremonies are still suspended.

Marriages and civil partnerships - from 10 July 2020

We're now offering appointments to give notice of marriage/civil partnership. Priority will be given to couples who have a pre-arranged booking or who had to rearrange their ceremony due to coronavirus.

You can also now book marriage and civil partnership ceremonies at the Register Office again, subject to availability. Guest numbers and dates will be limited due to government guidelines on social distancing.

Birth registrations

You can now book an appointment to register a birth at Middlesbrough Register Office. The demand for appointments is high, but we'll try to fit you in as soon as possible. 

If you had a baby in Middlesbrough in February, March and April

You can now make an appointment by ringing the Register Office on 01642 729004. Appointments are limited because we still need to follow safety guidelines and social distancing rules, so please be patient when we offer you an appointment, we'll do our best to find date and time which suits your needs.

If you had a baby in Middlesbrough in May or June

We'll be making appointments available to register babies born between these dates in the next few weeks. If you feel that you have exceptional reasons to register your baby sooner, please call the office on 01642 729004 to speak to a member of staff.

Registering a death

If you need to register a death, please call 01642 729004 to make an appointment. All death registrations will be made by telephone appointment only. We'll explain this in more detail when you speak to us.

Other changes to services

Applications for historical birth, death, and marriage certificates can only be made online between 9am and 2pm.

The Register Office is also:

  • postponing notice of marriage appointments until further notice
  • cancelling all wedding ceremonies for the foreseeable future
