Coronavirus (COVID-19) Register Office update

Middlesbrough is now in Tier 3. There are restrictions on some businesses, and meeting people. Get the latest local updates.

Birth and death registrations are still going ahead. Weddings and civil partnerships which should have been going ahead during the lockdown period (Thursday 5 November to Wednesday 2 December) have been cancelled. Due to the current uncertainty, we will not be taking any new wedding and civil partnership ceremony bookings for the forseeable future. We'll review this at the end of February 2021.

In line with government guidance, you should wear a face covering if you're attending an appointment at Middlesbrough Register Office.

If you need more information, please contact a member of staff on 01642 729004, and we'll be happy to help.

Read the latest Register Office update, including which services are cancelled until further notice.

Marriages and civil partnerships - updated 5 November 2020

In line with national guidance, weddings and civil partnerships will be suspended from Thursday 5 November (the beginning of the national month long lockdown).

We'll be contacting couples who had their ceremonies booked during the lockdown period (Thursday 5 November to Wednesday 2 December) to cancel or rearrange their bookings. We'll be offering either a full refund, or to arrange an alternative date (if lockdown restrictions are lifted). By booking during the coronavirus pandemic, you agree that you understand and accept the risk of late notice cancellations and/or rescheduling. We do aim to give customers as much notice as possible. If you've not heard from us, please contact us by emailing register@middlesbrough.gov.uk.

The coronavirus pandemic has not ended, and it may still be necessary to cancel and/or reschedule further ceremonies at short notice, due to changes in government restrictions, local lockdowns, or the need for our staff to self-isolate. We'll contact any affected customers as soon as possible if there are any changes to the services we're offering.

To avoid the risk of further disappointment, and to keep alternative dates free for couples whose ceremonies may have been cancelled several times already, we will not be taking any new wedding and civil partnership ceremony bookings for the foreseeable future. We'll review this at the end of February 2021. However, please contact us if exceptional circumstances apply, for example to request a wedding for someone who may be critically or terminally ill.

Other registration services, like birth and death registrations, are still taking place, with the appropriate restrictions and safety measures in place.

Birth registrations - updated 20 October 2020

Demand for birth registration appointments is very high. Appointments have now been released for babies born in all months of 2020.

Please contact the Register Office as soon as possible on 01642 729004 to arrange an appointment to register your child's birth.

We advise making a payment of £11 per certificate before the appointment so the birth certificate can be issued at the appointment.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Registering a death

If you need to register a death, please call 01642 729004 to make an appointment. All death registrations will be made by telephone appointment only. We'll explain this in more detail when you speak to us.

Other changes to services

Applications for historical birth, death, and marriage certificates can only be made online between 9am and 2pm.
