Changes to attendee numbers

The number of attendees allowed at a ceremony will change over the coming months, based on the government's roadmap out of coronavirus restrictions.

Step 1 - from 29 March 2021

There will be a legal limit of 6 attendees at ceremonies. However, ceremonies will no longer be limited to 'exceptional circumstances' (for example, where one member of the couple has a terminal illness).

Step 2 - no earlier than 12 April 2021

There will be a legal limit of 15 attendees at ceremonies.

Because of social distancing, the capacity of the Erimus room is 15 attendees. This includes the couple, witnesses, and guests, but does not include those working at the ceremony, like registration officials and venue managers.

Step 3 - no earlier than 17 May 2021

There will be a legal limit of 30 attendees at ceremonies.

Because of social distancing, the capacity of the Erimus room is 17 attendees. This includes the couple, witnesses, and guests, but does not include those working at the ceremony, like registration officials and venue managers.

Step 3 update – 14 June 2021

The government has announced a four-week pause at Step 3. Step 3 restrictions on ceremonies will stay in place during this time.

It's expected that England will move to Step 4 on 19 July, but the data will be reviewed after two weeks in case the risks have reduced. The government will continue to monitor the data and the move to Step 4 will be announced one week in advance.

Step 4 - 19 July 2021

To be confirmed by the government, depending on the data.
