Become a Boro Fit Picker!

Pick litter, get fitter.

Help combat pesky litter while getting your daily steps in - it's that simple!

This summer we've launched the Boro Fit Pickers - a brand new scheme which is all about taking pride in your local area. All you need to do is pick up a bit of litter while jogging or walking briskly. Being part of Boro Fit Pickers will help get your heart racing and improve your mental health, while also helping to protect nature and make Middlesbrough greener and cleaner.

Read on to find out more about Boro Fit Pickers, or check out our handy Fit Pickers guide. Unfortunately the document is not accessible - please email cleanup@middlesbrough.gov.uk if you need the information in a different format.

What is Boro Fit Pickers?

Boro Fit Pickers is part of the Keep Boro Tidy campaign, which is all about getting out and about to pick up litter in small corners of Middlesbrough.

Being a Boro Fit Picker takes litter picking a step further by adding a brisk walk as you go. So you won't just be helping to keep our town litter-free, you'll also be improving your physical and mental health!

As a fit picker, you'll be getting aerobic exercise, which has been proven to:

  • burn calories
  • lower blood pressure
  • help joint movement
  • help maintain a healthy heart
  • help build muscle (by picking and lifting rubbish bags)
  • increase endorphins which improves mood

Plus you'll get a sense of pride and achievement too!

Did you know that picking up litter while walking (especially brisk walking) for 30 minutes could burn up to 300 calories? If you choose to litter pick in a small group you'll be getting the social benefits too - you could even make some new friends.

How do I get involved?

It's easy to get involved! Just send us an email at cleanup@middlesbrough.gov.uk and let us know how many people would like to get involved in Boro Fit Pickers. You can go solo, in a pair, or in small or large groups. We're happy to welcome community groups, youth groups, religious groups, businesses, schools - you name it, we'd love to see you get involved!

We'll provide you with litter picking sticks, rubbish bags, and high-vis vests (optional). We can also offer you some advice to help you get started. Please note, we'll do our best to make sure everyone has enough equipment, but at busy times, there might not be enough for everyone.

Before your litter pick, let us know where you'll be leaving your bags of rubbish, and an estimate of how many there will be, so we can arrange to get them collected.

Please note, you're responsible for your own safety, and we cannot be held liable for incidents while you're litter picking. Please read our full terms and conditions and risk assessment before you contact us about holding a litter pick.

Where should I litter pick?

It's up to you! You can pick up litter in public places - for example, your estate or the streets around your house, or around your local shops or school. You could even set up a circuit where you do a loop of your local area or your local park. If you know a spot which often has quite a bit of litter, that would be a great place to start.

Please do not trespass on private land, like people's gardens.

What is Keep Boro Tidy?

We launched Keep Boro Tidy in 2017, to encourage residents, community groups, and businesses to take part in local litter picks to combat Middlesbrough's problem with litter.

Litter is a huge problem in the town, despite the best efforts of our teams, who pick up litter across Middlesbrough on a daily basis. Since they can't reach every piece of litter at every moment of the day, Keep Boro Tidy is a town-wide project where everyone can help us tackle the problem. Residents, schools, community groups, and businesses are all welcome to get involved as much or as little as they like.

We've had a fantastic response since the campaign first launched, whether it's people litter picking solo, in a pair, or in a small group of friends or family. Some litter pickers have even formed their own mini groups with neighbours. We'd like to give a huge thank you to everyone who has got involved so far, and we hope you take the next step by becoming a Boro Fit Picker!

Why should I help?

We're committed to going greener in Middlesbrough, and we're taking steps to improve our environment for ourselves, future generations, and our habitats and wildlife. All of these changes feed into the bigger picture of combating global warming and climate change.

We all need to do our bit not just to improve our local area, but also to help our planet. From the council and leading organisations in the town, to residents and the school pupils who are our future - together, we can all combat climate change.
