Registering to vote

The way we register to vote is called 'Individual Electoral Registration'.

This system came into effect in 2014. Previously, the way we registered to vote was different. Find out more at Your Vote Matters.

How do I register?

  1. Everyone is responsible for registering themselves
  2. Go to
  3. Fill in your name, address, date of birth and a few other details. You'll also need your National Insurance number, which can be found on your National Insurance card, or on official paperwork such as payslips, or letters about benefits or tax credits
  4. Look out for a confirmation to say you're registered
