Taxi licensing enforcement

We carry out regular taxi licensing enforcement exercises to protect people who use taxis, and to promote public safety.

As part of our role in licensing hackney carriages and private hire vehicles, we promote:

  • the protection of the public, safeguarding children and the vulnerable
  • the prevention of crime and disorder
  • the safety and health of the public and drivers
  • vehicle safety, comfort, and access

The actions we take as a result of enforcement help us to meet those obligations. These can include issuing warnings, suspending licences, and prosecutions.

We carry out regular enforcement exercises with officers from Cleveland Police's Road Policing Unit, inspecting taxis and private hire vehicles and their drivers. Enforcement checks include checking for vehicle defects and cleanliness, and making sure that drivers are properly licensed.
