Coronavirus (COVID-19) taxi licensing changes

Taxi licensing operational changes - from 25 March 2020

Due to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, and after requests from the taxi trade, we have made a number of operational changes.

These are temporary arrangements, which relate to licences expiring on, or before, 30 June 2020. If the situation changes, these arrangements may be extended to licences expiring on a future date.

What to do if your licence expires soon

If your driver or vehicle licence expires on or before 30 June 2020, you have two choices:

1. You can apply to renew it, subject to the changes set out below

or

2. You can allow the licence to lapse and renew it / them in the future, if you want to.

Applications for a new licence after expiry will be treated as a renewal up to 31 July 2020, but after that date, you’ll have to meet the requirements for a new licence.

If you allow your driver’s licence to expire, you must not drive a licensed vehicle, and, if you want to drive the vehicle for personal use, you would have to surrender the vehicle licence.

Process for driver renewals

Apply online as normal.

You can apply for a 3 month licence for £30 (or the usual 1 year or 3 year licences at the standard cost). When the 3 month licence expires, you’ll have to apply for a new 1 year or 3 year licence.

DBS checks are suspended until 31 July 2020.

Medical checks are suspended until 31 July 2020, but you will have to confirm by email, when we ask you, that there has been no change in your medical fitness since your last medical.

Process for vehicle renewals

Apply online as normal.

You can apply for a 6 month licence for £115 for a Hackney Carriage and £108 for a Private Hire vehicle (or the usual 1 year licence at the standard cost). When the 6 month licence expires, you’ll have to apply for a new 1 year licence.

Although the government has announced it is suspending MOT tests from 30 March 2020, and will be automatically extending MOTs for a period of 6 months, our Test Centre is still undertaking taxi tests and MOT tests. You’ll be expected to present your vehicle for a taxi test before renewing your licence. If this situation changes, you’ll be notified by the Licensing Office.
