A Middlesbrough couple who changed the lives of more than 90 children as foster carers have been recognised in the New Year Honours list.

Caroline and Gordon McGough were both awarded MBEs for their services to foster care after being nominated by Middlesbrough Council.

The couple have provided a safe, warm and happy life for Middlesbrough children who need care - looking after more than 90 young people over almost 30 years before their retirement last year.

The Acklam couple, who have four children and eight grandchildren, went on to adopt two of the children they fostered, who are now adults with families of their own.

They provided care to many on a respite and short-term basis, but looked after other young people on a longer term basis so that long-term plans for forever homes could be agreed.

Cllr Luke Henman, Executive Member for Children's Services, said: "I want to warmly congratulate Caroline and Gordon for their MBEs - it's recognition that is so richly deserved.

"Their selfless work has changed lives and given young people the love and support they deserve – changing lives for the better.

"The fact many of those Caroline and Gordon looked after as children stay in touch with them shows the impact they’ve had and is very touching.

"I want to pay tribute to them and every foster carer in Middlesbrough. Our town is proud of you.

"We need many more Carolines and Gordons. I would encourage anyone who has ever thought of doing it themselves to find out more about what many foster carers say is the most rewarding thing they’ve ever done."
