Our stories: Community Inclusion Service - The Impact Drama Group

The Impact Drama Group are an integral part of Middlesbrough Council's Community Inclusion Service, providing learning and development drama experiences for adults with learning disabilities in Middlesbrough.

Established in 2007, they are an enthusiastic, creative and dynamic team who have adapted to the ever-changing face of social care and challenge themselves and others to overcome barriers offering a positive and rewarding experience for group members. Their main focus at all times is the attendees, demonstrating the ability to listen, plan and work with individuals to deliver and support drama within an atmosphere of fun, laughter and learning.

Based within a local church hall, the Impact Drama Group have increased inclusion and empowerment with individuals so that they become part of their local community.

The group continues to communicate and deliver stage performances and short social message films that raise the profile and awareness of issues relating to people with learning disabilities. The Impact Drama Group have worked with Cleveland Police (Commissioners Office), the National Health Service, the Local Education Authority, a local transport agency, MIND and Middlesbrough Council to affect the service provided by their employees by showing them creative perspectives of customers and in particular those with disabilities and vulnerabilities.

Person-centred approaches applied by staff are the key to helping nurture creative goals and aspirations, encouraging group members to become the centre of activity! This is what makes drama so much fun and why it is so successful here. The team always go that extra mile to ensure that the experiences for the person recognise the individual skills/abilities and uniqueness of everyone's contributions.

A mother of one of the group members praised the team, saying: "My son has been a member of the Impact Drama Group ever since it first started. Before the drama group started he did not have much confidence in joining in activities with other people. He was embarrassed if he noticed anybody watching him, and would stop what he was doing and go into his shell.

"Working with the drama group has made him more outgoing in front of people. I never expected him to perform on a stage in front of an audience but he loves it. He puts everything into his performance, and when one show has finished he can't wait for the next one to start. The drama group sessions are the highlight of his week and he would be lost without it."

Through their work, the team have been able to transform the lives of some individuals who have previously remained isolated, but whom now feel valued and appreciated.
