Middlesbrough Inclusion Conference

Wednesday 20th November 2019, 9am-4pm
Middlesbrough Football Club

Middlesbrough is on an exciting journey towards greater inclusion and inclusivity for all of our children and young people. Belonging is at the heart of learning because it is the bedrock upon which children can develop. The Belonging Conference sets out to challenge and provoke our thinking and curiosity. We have lined up a broad range of nationally renowned speakers to help us move to the next level, along with a variety of fantastic workshops and a marketplace which will show case best practice, innovation and new approaches.

Keynote speakers

Dr Kathryn Riley
Author, researcher, educationalist

Professor Riley's innovative research on place and belonging addresses concerns about the influence of global and extreme events on young peoples’ lives. Her research throws a spotlight on schools as places of belonging; leadership as a place-making activity; and research engagement as a powerful place-making tool. It signals the duality of the leadership role: the importance of reaching out beyond the school gates to connect to communities, and seeking to create the kinds of social spaces within school where young people and adults feel they belong.

Nick Whittaker
HMI and Specialist Adviser, SEND

Nick has over 25 years of teaching and leadership experience in secondary and special schools. Prior to joining Ofsted he was the executive headteacher of two all-through special schools for children and young people with severe learning difficulties and complex needs. Nick also has experience as a senior local authority adviser and school improvement partner.

Mike Stevenson
Award winning entrepreneur
