Volunteers are wanted for a community litter pick in Middlesbrough as seeds are sewn for increased green initiatives.

The event takes place in North Ormesby on Thursday, October 21 from 1pm-3pm.

Everyone is welcome and volunteers are advised to meet at North Ormesby Hub on Derwent Street and equipment is provided.

Yesterday Middlesbrough Council's Executive team approved a scheme to help the town's growing number of community-minded litter pickers.

The committee agreed to spend £150,000 (£50,000 per year over three years) to provide support to ensure Community Groups and Volunteers have the right training, guidance and equipment to safely carry out their activities.

Earlier in the year Middlesbrough Council announced its green strategy which involves immediate action to make the town a leader in environmental issues within 12 months.

It includes immediate planting of thousands of trees, sewing wild flowers, installation of bee hives, the purchase of electric vehicles, creation of nature reserves and ‘mini forests' and work to increase recycling rates.
