Middlesbrough is getting ready to celebrate this June with a host of special events planned for the weekend of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

From Thursday, June 2 – Sunday, June 5, the town and surrounding areas of Middlesbrough will be alive with the sounds of street parties, celebrations and one-off events.

Orange Pip fans will be rejoicing at the news that the bank holiday weekend will see not one, but two markets in Centre Square on the Thursday and the Friday.

Featuring all the usual foodie favourites plus an epic line-up of live music and street theatre, there will also be sweet treats, artisan snacks, arty workshops and a spot of Salsa dancing too.

Between 8 and 10pm on Thursday, June 2, visitors can stroll down to the Dorman Museum to enjoy a Jubilee Night at the Museum featuring tea and cakes, live music and an opportunity to look around a special Jubilee-themed exhibition.

The official beacon lighting will follow at the Cenotaph at 9.30pm.

Friday, June 3 will see a Jubilee parade, celebrating 70 years of the Queen’s reign. Local schools and community groups will all feature a specially-designed theme that reflects the seven decades of the Queen’s reign.

The 1pm town centre parade will be free to attend, and waving and cheering on the parade participants is strongly encouraged!

On Saturday, June 4 the action moves to Albert Park for a day of music at the bandstand. Featuring choirs and a brass band, the park will also have large games, such as Connect 4, and free sports to try out.

The roller rink will be open for anyone wanting to take a spin and the swan boats will be available for hire from the visitor information centre.

Sunday, June 5 will see street parties taking place throughout the town and Albert Park will play host to a large-scale community party.

Other events in the lead-up to the Jubilee weekend include:

A Queen’s Platinum Jubilee choir workshop in Middlesbrough Town Hall on Saturday, May 28 from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Participants will perform in the town centre on Thursday, June 2 and in Albert Park on Saturday, June 4.

The History Wardrobe will be performing a Jubilee special featuring coronation costumes at Middlesbrough Central Library on Monday, May 30.

A micro-exhibition highlighting royal visits to Teesside will be available at Middlesbrough Central Library throughout May as part of Local History Month. The exhibition will also be available during the library’s opening hours over the Jubilee weekend.

Middlesbrough Deputy Mayor Councillor Mieka Smiles said: “We are absolutely delighted to be putting on so many events and celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Middlesbrough.

“It’s going to be a brilliant weekend packed full of entertainment and we hope that everyone gets on board and joins in the fun.

“Whether you’re hosting a street party or coming down to Centre Square for Orange Pip, we want everyone to enjoy the long bank holiday weekend and all the fab events and activities that are on offer!”
