Firms receive £45m in Covid support

Middlesbrough is getting more support to tackle the spike in coronavirus cases. Find out more about the extra support.

Businesses around Middlesbrough have now received more than £45m in Covid grants via the Council, Mayor Andy Preston revealed today.

Middlesbrough Council has issued the payments across various schemes to protect jobs and boost growth plans.

Mayor Preston has praised the patience and resilience of the town's firms and is looking forward to a much brighter future.

"We started getting money into the accounts of Middlesbrough companies before we received a penny from government," he said.

"All the way through the pandemic we've moved fast to help businesses weather the storm.

"Lockdowns and restrictions have been unbelievably tough, but I'm proud of the way our staff have worked so hard to support businesses."

Recently, the Council used part of its Additional Restrictions Grant funding to support firms who could demonstrate robust growth plans to support economic recovery and the creation of hundreds of jobs over the next three years in the digital, advanced manufacturing, culture and leisure sectors.

Since the start of the pandemic the Council has administered the following government schemes:

  • Mandatory and Discretionary Grants (March - September 2020) - £25m
  • Local Restrictions and Restart grants - £16m
  • Additional Restrictions Grant - £4m

The schemes are now closed with the Council required to carry out checks with selected businesses who received payments.

Businesses are being urged to provide information as soon as possible, to prevent the need for any grants to be recovered.

With all grant funding now spent the Council is aiming to secure further support to help businesses with their recovery plans.
