An icon of the North East skyline turns 130 this month – and everyone’s invited to the party.
Middlesbrough Town Hall is marking the major milestone with a packed programme of free events on Friday, January 25 and Saturday, January 26.
The neo-Gothic masterpiece’s anniversary comes less than a year after the building re-opened following a 21-month and £7.7m refurbishment funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Middlesbrough Council.
The party gets off to a dazzling high-tech start in the capable hands of award-winning digital artist Seb Lee-Delisle and his Laser Light Synths - with local residents as the stars of the show!
Visitors to the Victorian landmark will be able to unleash their inner rock star, playing the synths and watching the outside of the building come to life with shimmering, dancing multi-coloured lights!
On Saturday, January 26, local music legend and Maximo Park frontman, Paul Smith, will be spinning the decks with a DJ set from 1.30pm to 3pm.
And he’ll be back in the evening with very special gig - Our Town Hall: The Musical Heart of Middlesbrough - inspired by the range of music that has been performed at the Town Hall, from Strauss to Bowie.
Tickets for this must-see event are free and can only be won via the Town Hall’s social media giveaways – be sure to follow Middlesbrough Town Hall, lovemiddlesbrough and Middlesbrough Council to be in with a chance.
Councillor Mick Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Culture and Communities, said: “The refurbishment of Middlesbrough Town Hall has given this magnificent building a whole new lease of life, and it really does have something for everyone.
“The 130th anniversary later this month is the perfect opportunity to showcase one of the region’s great entertainment venues.
“It’s a celebration of more than a century of world class acts and performers, and a look to the future as the Town Hall embarks on the next phase of its remarkable journey.”
