Tributes paid to former Mayor

Tributes have been paid this week following the death of former Middlesbrough Councillor and Mayor Chris Robson at the age of 85.

Cllr Robson represented Berwick Hills Ward for Labour from 1973 to 1979, and then Pallister Ward from 1979 to 2007.

He was also Middlesbrough’s 126th Civic Mayor from 1989 to 1990.

As a Councillor he served as Chairman of District Services, and took a close interest in housing, community development and leisure.

He was also Director of East Middlesbrough Community Ventures and a member of Phoenix Housing Association.

In a long career Cllr Robson served as a Corporal in the RAF, as well as spells as a Co-op branch manager, bus conductor, steel worker and ICI process operator.

Cllr Robson and his late wife Marlene had three children, Julie, Peter and Angela.

An ardent Boro fan of nearly 50 years’ standing, he even attended a match on the afternoon of his wedding.

Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd said: “Chris was an outgoing and hard-working Councillor who put his local community at the heart of everything he did.

“He will be sadly missed and our condolences go out to his family.”

  • Cllr Robson’s funeral will take place at St Bede’s Chapel, Teesside Crematorium at 10am on Saturday, December 22. Family flowers only – donations to Teesside Hospice.
