Research service

Teesside Archives will close at 1pm on Thursday 21 December for Christmas and Annual Collections Week, reopening at 11am on Tuesday 9 January 2018. We will be unable to respond to enquiries during this time.

We can undertake most types of research including local history, the history of a business, house or building, and some family history enquiries. The majority of basic family history enquiries should be sent to Middlesbrough Reference Library or alternatively, you could contact Stockton, Hartlepool or Redcar Reference Library.

For more information on baptism, marriage and burial records in Teesside please see Researching family history.

Research requests need to be as specific as possible. For example, we can't help with a request about 'the Smith family of Middlesbrough ' or 'the economic growth of Stockton', but we might be able to help if you ask for information on John Smith, born c.1885 in St Hilda's, or ask for information about a particular local company or ship.

As well as providing a research service we are also able to provide copies of some documents either as photocopies or watermarked scans. If you have found a document you are interested in but you are unable to visit us in person, please send us an initial enquiry with the details so we can check whether it can be copied. Please note we can only copy documents up to A3 size.

It is not always possible to find or verify information due to the nature of the records, and while every effort will be made to provide accurate and complete information, Teesside Archives cannot be held responsible for any errors and omissions.

Initial enquiry

Before you request and pay for research or copies of documents please contact us with your initial enquiry to allow us to check if we have records relevant to your research.

Please view our catalogues to search our collections. Please make a note of the reference numbers for any items you would like us to include in your research or that you may like copies of. Please note that not all our collections are fully catalogued and we can help you to identify relevant records that may not yet be in our catalogue.

Once you have received a confirmation that we have records relevant to your research, you can request and pay for a search.

Please note:

  • If you make a payment for research without first getting confirmation from an initial enquiry, your fee will not be refunded if we are unable to complete the research due to records being unavailable.
  • All research is provided for private research purposes only. If you wish to publish (in a publication, book, website, social media, video etc.) any of the information provided you will need to contact us to obtain a licence and additional fees may apply.

We can undertake a simple search (up to 30 minutes) of specific sources for a charge of £12.50 including VAT. This service provides an experienced member of staff to undertake your research and a basic research report including copies (either by post or email) of relevant documents where possible.

Once we have received your request we aim to respond within 10 working days. If you have requested that your research report and any copies are sent to you by post, please allow an additional 5 days for delivery.
