Who are we and what do we do?

The library provides:

  • Access to library services
  • Access to reference services including local and family history
  • Information on local public services
  • Free access to the internet and Wi-Fi
  • Space for community meetings and activities
  • Early years and youth services, activities and support
  • Photocopying, printing and fax facilities
  • Memory Lane Dementia Cafe

What type of personal data do we collect and how do we collect it?

In order to provide you with our services we need to collect the following personal information, this will be collected from you on your library application or when you use our services:

  • name, address, telephone number, email address and date of birth;

What is our power to obtain and use personal data?

In carrying out the above, the Library processes your personal data in a variety of ways, each of which may have a different legal basis. We may process your personal data because:

  • You have given your consent (e.g. for the provision of marketing correspondence)
  • It is necessary for the performance of a contract with you (e.g. the purchase of tickets or other goods or services)
  • We are under a legal obligation to do so (e.g. for equality monitoring or health & safety purposes)
  • It is in the public interest and in the performance of our official duties (e.g. the provision of access to, and the security of, our Collections as set out in the British Library Act 1972)

What is your personal data used for?

We may use your information to provide you with the services delivered by the library, we may use the data to record:

  • records of items you have borrowed and any charges incurred;
  • home delivery visits
  • make book requests.
  • We do not view or retain any credit or debit card information you may share with a third-party Payment Provider

Depersonalised or aggregated information does not personally identify you

  • It may be used for statistical analysis and administration, including analysis of trends, carrying out actuarial work, tailoring products and Services, risk assessment and analysis of costs and charges in relation to our Services.
  • We may automatically collect certain information from you (such as usage information) when you use our data collection media, through the use of web beacons, device identifiers, cookies and similar technologies. We may combine this information with other personal information that we have collected from or about you in order to learn more about how you use our data collection media and Services so that we can improve our Service offering.

Will your personal data be shared?

The law says we must protect the public funds that we administer. It says that we must share information (including library data) with other bodies responsible for auditing or administering public funds, to prevent and detect fraud, safeguard public safety, and in risk of harm or emergency situations.

How do we keep your personal data secure?

We ensure though access privileges and secure systems that no one other than the library service staff who need to access your data in order to assist you and or provide you with services has access to your information.

How long will we keep your personal data?

We will only keep your data for as long as necessary and in line with our Middlesbrough Council Retention Policy.

Is your personal data processed overseas?

We do not send your personal information outside of the European Economic Area to be processed.

Marketing

We will only send you information about our services and/or products if you have agreed for us to do so or we are sending you information in relation to similar services you have received in the past.  You can opt out of this at any time by letting us know by unsubscribing or replying with your request.

What are your information rights?

Your Information Rights are set out in law and, subject to some exceptions, you have the:

  • Right to rectification - to ask for information to be corrected
  • Right to erasure - to have your personal data deleted
  • Right to object - to how your data is used
  • Right to restriction - to request limits on how your data is used
  • Right to portability - to request that we move your data to another organisation
  • Right of subject access - to request a copy of data the Council holds about you
