A19 Tees Viaduct bridge works

Highways England are planning to replace the bridge joints on the A19 Tees Viaduct in March and April this year. The existing joints date back to when the Viaduct first opened to traffic in December 1975. These are now at the end of their life, having carried high volumes of traffic for over 44 years.

To carry these works out, a series of weekend closures of the northbound and southbound carriageways are needed. Each closure will begin at 9pm on the Friday and run until 6am on the Monday. The planned closure dates are as follows:

Carriageway to be closed

Friday 6, Saturday 7, Sunday 8 March

Friday 20, Saturday 21, Sunday 22 March

Friday 27, Saturday 28, Sunday 29 March

Friday 17, Saturday 18, Sunday 19 April

These dates have been chosen to avoid any potential clashes with other planned events, including matches at the Riverside Stadium. Two further weekends have been planned in case the programme of works needs to be amended or extended due to unforeseen circumstances.

The primary diversion route during each closure will be via A1032 Tees (Newport) Bridge Approach Road, Newport Roundabout and the A66. This is the same diversion as is used during the routine overnight closures of the Viaduct for planned maintenance works. A secondary diversion route will be signposted via A1027 Stockton Ring Road, A177 Durham Road Bypass, A1305 Maritime Road, A1305 Riverside, A135 1825 Way and the A66 through Thornaby and past Teesside Park.

Please avoid the area around the Viaduct if possible while the closures are in operation.
