Social housing

Social rented sector housing

A social housing provides accommodation which is affordable for people on low incomes. Unlike in the private rental sector, there are rules around who is able to apply for social housing, and accommodation is usually allocated to households based on their level of need.

Registered providers (housing associations)

Middlesbrough Council doesn't own any social housing; all social housing in Middlesbrough is owned and managed by registered providers (often called housing associations). These are independent, not-for-profit organisations, which means that any surplus money they make must be invested back into maintaining existing homes and helping to pay for new ones.

Registered providers are regulated and funded by the Homes and Communities Agency, which is responsible for the construction of new social housing.

Supported living accommodation

Thirteen owns and manages a number of extra care and sheltered housing schemes which offer specialist support to help older and vulnerable people to live independently for longer. Read more about supported living with Thirteen.
