About bulky waste
Bulky waste is household waste or rubbish that can't go into your wheelie bin.
We have a free service to collect bulky items. The service is available to all residents of Middlesbrough, and is offered in addition to the weekly rubbish and fortnightly recycling collections.
The free collection service is very popular and time slots are being filled months in advance. To help with this, we're starting an additional collection service where you can pay to have your items collected within three weeks. You can find out more, including costs, further down the page.
Examples of bulky waste are:
- kitchen items - e.g. fridge, freezer, cooker, microwave
- electrical items - e.g. TV, computer, washing machine
- furniture - e.g. sofa, bed
Please note, we can't remove any items which are 6ft or over.
Businesses must request a one-off collection, not a bulky waste collection. There is a cost for this service.
Before we remove your items
Before requesting a bulky waste collection, have you thought about donating your items to charity? Many charities will collect things from your home for free.
Another option is to take the items to the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Haverton Hill.
Book a bulky waste collection
The free collection service is very popular and time slots are being filled months in advance. When you phone up and make a booking, the Customer Centre will be able to tell you the waiting time for a collection in your area.
We know that some people can't wait for several months to get rid of their items. So we've introduced a premium bulky waste collection service, where you can pay for your items to be collected within three weeks. You'll need to pay for your collection to secure your collection date.
Charges for the premium service are:
- £20 for up to 5 items
- £40 for up to 10 items
- £60 for up to 15 items
The service will be reviewed in six months.
If you need to get rid of your unwanted items immediately, you can still take them to the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Haverton Hill.
When your waste is collected
For both bulky waste and premium bulky waste collections, we'll give you a collection date, and advice about how to present your items for collection. For safety reasons, if you're getting glass collected, it must be taped, bubble-wrapped, or smashed up and placed in a box which is securely taped up.
We'll collect items from an easily accessible point, closest to the outside of your property. Our teams can't enter your home to remove, or help to remove, items. Please make sure the items are placed at the collection point before 7am on the day of collection.
Please note, we have to make separate collections for electrical and non-electrical items due to environmental legislation.
