As set out in our integrated transport strategy, we're committed to increasing the number of local journeys made on foot and by bike. Reducing the use of private cars for local journeys will reduce congestion, improve air quality, and help the social and economic regeneration of the town.

We're planning to introduce a shared use footpath / cycleway along the south side of B1380 Low Lane. This will be between the bridle footbridge over the A174 Parkway (also known as the 'Curly Wurly Bridge') and the junction with Brookfield Avenue / the A174 Parkway eastbound exit slip road. It will cross Low Lane with a new traffic signal-controlled toucan crossing, for pedestrians and cyclists. This kind of crossing lets users cross bigger roads in stages, via an 'island' in the middle of the road.

The proposed footpath / cycleway will improve connections both along Low Lane and across the Parkway, which is currently a significant barrier to people travelling on foot or by bike.
