E-scooters

We're currently running a trial of electronic scooters (e-scooters) in Middlesbrough. This will help us decide whether e-scooters are suitable to be used on our roads, and whether we should keep them available in the town permanently.

The rules

We've partnered with Ginger to provide e-scooters for this trial. You must use a scooter hired from Ginger - you cannot use privately-owned scooters on our roads.

To use the scooters, you must:

  • be 18 or over
  • have a full or provisional driving licence
  • register an account with Ginger

The scooters must not be used on footpaths, and they are restricted to roads with a speed limit of less than 40mph. Misusing an e-scooter can result in a fine and penalty points on your driving licence.

Riding safely is crucial to keep both you and other road users safe. Ginger has a handy training guide to help you understand the rules of the road, and how to ride safely.

Cost

You can find out about the cost of hiring a scooter, and answers to any questions you have, on the Ginger website.

Tell us what you think

As this is a trial, we're keen to get feedback from residents. If you have any comments, please email them to transport_consultation@middlesbrough.gov.uk.

For more information, you can check our e-scooter briefing note.
