Middlesbrough Local List

Important - changes to pre-application and informal enquiry services

We've made some changes to our pre-application advice service. These changes may affect you if you're looking for pre-application advice about conservation. Find out more about conservation pre-application advice.

The aim of the Local List is to identify buildings, structures, parks, gardens and open spaces in Middlesbrough which are thought to be of special local architectural and / or historic interest.

Middlesbrough's Local List

Middlesbrough’s Local List has 91 buildings and sites on it, which were identified by a public call for suggestions, assessed using criteria and agreed by the council in 2011.

Having a Local List is particularly important for Middlesbrough, because of how and when it developed and grew. Much of its heritage is young (in a national context) and therefore does not always meet national criteria to be listed buildings. For example, any building or structure older than 1830 is significant for Middlesbrough, but nationally many listed buildings are considerably older than this.

Development

Where planning permission is needed for development to and around Local List buildings, their significance (the reason they are on the Local List) is an important consideration in the planning process. We manage change to, and around, Local List buildings in a positive way, enabling sustainable uses, while also sustaining and enhancing what is locally significant about them.
