Post-16 education

England is now in lockdown again. A number of businesses must close and there are more restrictions on meeting people. Find out what this means for you.

Young people in care and care leavers over the age of 16 are a particularly vulnerable age group who are over-represented in NEET figures.

These young people may:

  • have underachieved at 16
  • have low self-esteem
  • have low aspirations
  • want to move into independent living without having the necessary skills
  • want much less contact with social services

To help this group there is:

  • a post-16 PEP
  • continuing support from the Pathways Team
  • a personal adviser
  • a post-16 bursary of £1200 for those in full time education and training

The 16-19 bursary:

  • is paid directly to schools
  • is to be used to support education e.g. books, equipment, transport
  • can be paid in instalments dependent on attendance, work rate, etc.
