Drinking less

The risk to your health is increased by drinking any amount of alcohol on a regular basis. To keep your risk of alcohol-related harm low, the NHS recommends not regularly drinking more than 14 units of alcohol a week. Regular or frequent drinking means drinking alcohol most weeks.

If you drink as much as 14 units a week, it's best to spread this evenly over three or more days. If you're trying to reduce the amount of alcohol you drink, it's a good idea to have several alcohol-free days each week.

For more information on drinking less, visit NHS Choices, One you – drinking, and Change4Life.

Information and support

If you, or someone you know, are struggling to cope with alcohol use, Middlesbrough Recovering Together (MRT) can help. MRT provides a wide range of support including prescribing, psychosocial interventions, counselling, and recovery support.

MRT is made up of experienced staff, volunteers, and peer mentors (some of whom are in recovery from alcohol use themselves) who provide group sessions and one-to-one support across Middlesbrough. The service is open to both young people and adults. You can contact MRT directly on 01642 232688 for support, alternatively you can visit one of the many drop-in sessions where you can speak to someone and receive support immediately.

Address: MRT, 2 Park Road North, Middlesbrough, TS1 3LF

Affected by someone else’s alcohol use?

Branches is a peer-led support group that offers support to people affected by a loved one’s alcohol use. They offer a forum where you can talk to others who are experiencing, or have experienced, feelings similar to your own, and gives you the chance to meet people who may be able to offer support and advice outside of the forum.

The group is run by volunteers who are dedicated to doing their best to support you, and while they can't provide professional help (such as psychological therapy/counselling), they can point you in the right direction depending on what your needs are.

Branches currently offers two drop-in sessions a week at Safehaven, 48 Albert Road, Middlesbrough, TS1 1QD:

Mondays: 10am to 12noon

Thursday: 10am to 2pm

An evening session also runs at Hope North East, 112-114 Marton Road, Middlesbrough, TS1 2DY:

Tuesdays: 5pm to 7pm
