Hardship relief

You may be able to claim hardship relief to reduce the amount of Business Rates you have to pay.

To be eligible, you must prove that both:

• you would be in financial difficulty without the relief
• giving the relief to your business is in the interests of local people

Please note, many properties in central Middlesbrough fall into the Middlesbrough Development Corporation (MDC) boundary. If your property is in the MDC area, we may need the Middlesbrough Development Corporation to make a decision on the relief. We will let you know if this is the case. You must pay the instalments shown on your bill until your application for hardship relief has been decided. If you do not pay, we may take recovery action.
