Street trading licence

Registration of street trading

If you wish to sell items from a stall in Middlesbrough, you must obtain a street trading consent from the council. Applications must be made in writing (including by electronic means) and will be subject to a fee. If you wish to trade at North Ormesby market, please see the market trader licence page.

You must be over 17 years of age to hold a licence.

Some streets within Middlesbrough are either designated as consent streets or prohibited streets. Middlesbrough Council will not issue street trading consents for any person to trade in a 'prohibited street'. Please see the downloads section for a list of consent streets and prohibited streets.

Applications must include:

  • name, address and date of birth of the applicant
  • details of the street and location of the pitch, or areas the applicant wishes to trade
  • the days and times they wish to trade
  • descriptions of articles, things or services intended to be traded
  • storage arrangements

You must comply with any conditions attached to the street trading consent.

Food traders must also register with Middlesbrough Council's Environmental Health service.

Alternatively, you can download an application form and return it to the Principal Licensing Officer.

What happens next?
You'll be able to start trading if you've not heard from the council within 8 weeks.
