Apply for a bigger refuse bin

We're introducing fortnightly rubbish collections for residents with a black refuse bin. There are no changes for residents who use sacks or a communal bin.

If you're going to struggle with only getting your rubbish collected every 2 weeks, you might be eligible for a bigger bin.

The deadline to apply for a bigger bin for guaranteed delivery in time for fortnightly collections was 17 April. You can still apply for a bin, but it might not be delivered until after fortnightly collections start.

Eligibility

Your eligibility will depend on the people in your household.

2 people in your household

add

You can buy an extra bin. It will cost you £40.

Most households can manage fortnightly collections with their existing bin, so please make sure you're recycling as much as possible.

Apply

You can apply online. You'll need to say why you're eligible.

You'll need to sign into your MyMiddlesbrough account to fill in the form. It's quick and easy to create a MyMiddlesbrough account if you do not have one already. If you already have an account, before you begin to apply please make sure all your personal details are added to your profile and they are correct.

3 or more people in your household

add

You're eligible for a bigger bin, unless you already have one. There's no cost to you.

We'll take your current bin away and replace it with a bigger bin. You cannot keep both.

Someone in your household has an assessed condition (medical) that produces extra general household waste

add

If someone in your household has an assessed condition (medical) that produces extra general household waste, you may be eligible for a bigger bin.

You'll need to explain what the condition is and what kind of waste it creates. We'll do an assessment to decide if you're eligible.

If you do not fit into any of these categories, you're not eligible for a bigger bin.

If you're struggling to cope with fortnightly collections, make sure you're recycling as much as possible so there's less in your bin. It may also help to compost your food waste, if you can.

If you still have too much rubbish, you can pay for a bulky waste collection or take it to the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

What happens next?

Fortnightly collections will start in summer 2024, so for now you can keep putting your black bin out every week. You can check your collection dates on MyMiddlesbrough. Find out about the new way to see your bin collection dates this year.

We'll deliver the new bins between May and June 2024. We'll email you closer to the time.

If you're getting a bigger bin, we'll take away your current bin on the same day.

If we need to do an assessment, we'll look at the information you've provided and contact you if we need to know more. Once we've done the assessment, we'll let you know if you're eligible for an extra bin.
