Employment of children
School age children can benefit greatly from part-time employment, if the work is suitable and properly regulated.
Schoolwork, homework and attendance at school are paramount.
Any employment that is undertaken by a school aged child must be licensed with Middlesbrough Council and an employment card must be obtained by the employer.
Hours that a child may work are:

|13 - 14 years||Term time||2 hours before school
2 hours after school
1 hour before and 1 hour after school
Up to 5 hours on a Saturday totalling up to 12 hours per week
|School holidays||Up to a total of 25 hours per week|
|15 - 16 years||Term time||
2 hours before school
Up to 8 hours on a Saturday totalling up to 12 hours per week.

Children in entertainment
Middlesbrough Council issues licences for school age children to perform in the theatre or on television. Before granting a licence the Local Education Authority will liaise with the head teacher of the child's school to ensure that the child's education will not suffer should the licence be granted.
