Home to school transport

As a parent you're legally responsible for making sure your child attends school. In some cases, we (the council) can offer some pupils travel assistance between home and school. You can find out more on this page.

Unfortunately the online application form for travel assistance is not available yet. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Special educational need or disability (SEND) home to school travel support - academic year 2023/2024

If your child has a special educational need or disability (SEND) or has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), they may be eligible for travel support to their education setting.

If your child will be getting home to school travel assistance for the first time, the council's SEND team will contact our Independent Needs Assessor. We will then contact you as soon as possible to explain the type of travel assistance your child will get for the academic year 2023/2024.

If your child currently gets our SEND home to school travel assistance, and this will be continuing from September 2023 onwards, we will send you any updates about their travel assistance during July or August 2023. We'll write to you at the address we currently have on our records.

If you have any questions about your child's SEND travel assistance please get in touch by emailing transport@middlesbrough.gov.uk.

Education and Inspections Act travel support - academic year 2023/2024

Please note - for September 2023, eligible students at The Kings Academy will only be offered travel assistance in the form of refunding fares. There are no designated home to school coaches to operate for mainstream school.

Once a student has been assessed as eligible for assistance, we'll send a payment form to their parent or carer. This needs to be returned before 28 July 2023.

Any applications assessed as eligible, or payment forms received after this date, may not be processed in time for payments to be made before the start of the September 2023 academic term.

New applications 2023/2024

You can get information about eligibility and how to apply for new home to school travel assistance for the academic year 2023/2024 in the how to apply for travel assistance (new) 2023/2024 document.

Once you've read the guidance, use the EIA application form (new) 2023-2024 to apply.

This information and application form are for all new applicants who did not get travel support during 2022/2023.

We aim to initially assess your application within 20 working days of receiving it, if it includes all the information we need. For example, evidence that your child is eligible, a photograph of your child, etc. The application form has more information about what you need to include in your application.

You must send your application to us by Friday 19 May 2023 to make sure your child's support is in place for the start of the September 2023 term.

It's your responsibility as a parent, carer, or guardian to make sure your child attends school.

Renewal applications 2023/2024

If you're applying to renew your child's existing travel support, you live in Middlesbrough, and your child's home is where you live, apply using the EIA application form 2023/2024 Year 8-11 renewal form.

Information about eligibility and how to apply for the renewal of home to school travel assistance for academic year 2023/2024 is available in the how to apply for travel assistance (renewal) 2023/2024 document.
